Isolation of influenza virus type A(H3), December 2000 - Osaka

(IASR 2001;22:6-6)

The case was a 10-year-old boy complaining of fever (39-40C) and headache. He visited a nearby pediatrician on December 11, 2000. The rapid influenza test (Directigen Flu ATM) was positive, thus his nasopharyngeal swab and gargle fluid were forwarded to the Osaka Prefectural Institute of Public Health. He was not vaccinated prior to the illness.

The specimen was inoculated onto MDCK cells and influenza virus A/H3 was isolated. Hemagglutination titer against guinea pig RBCs was 1:128 (gargle fluid) and 1:192 (swab). Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test was carried out using ferret antisera provided by NIID for the 2000/01 season. The results showed HI titer of 1:640 for A/Panama/2007/99(H3N2) (homo-titer 1:640), and less than 1:20 for A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1) and A/Moscow/13/98(H1N1).

Epidemiological situation in his family and the school was not available.
